A Brief History of the Grand Egyptian Museum

• 1992: The Egyptian government launches an ambitious plan to create a new museum near the Giza Plateau—a sanctuary to house and preserve the nation’s vast antiquities.
• 2002: An international design competition culminates in victory for Ireland’s Heneghan Peng Architects, whose visionary design aligns harmoniously with the Pyramids.
• 2005: Site preparation begins, and the colossal statue of Ramses II is ceremoniously moved from Cairo’s main station to the museum’s future home.
• 2010–2013: Construction slows due to political and economic shifts following the Arab Spring, yet the vision endures—work resumes in determined phases.
• 2018–2021: Major structural and exhibition halls are completed; thousands of artifacts, including Tutankhamun’s treasures, are carefully transferred from older museums.
• 2023: The building reaches substantial completion, with soft openings and limited tours welcoming the first awe-inspired guests.
• 2024–2025: The full grand opening is scheduled, positioning the GEM as the world’s largest archaeological museum and Egypt’s flagship cultural beacon.

Who Built the Grand Egyptian Museum?

This monumental achievement was brought to life by an international alliance of excellence: Heneghan Peng Architects (Ireland) designed the museum, with structural engineering by Arup and services engineering by Buro Happold. The landscape master plan was crafted by West 8, while exhibition and museology work was led by Atelier Brückner. The architectural vision masterfully blends contemporary techniques with a profound respect for ancient Egyptian design—aligning the building with the nearby pyramids, employing geometric façades, and organizing galleries to reflect chronology and thematic depth.

Architecture of the Grand Egyptian Museum

Monumental & Symbolic Design: The museum’s triangular façade is composed of translucent, alabaster-like panels that filter daylight to create a shimmering, ethereal glow—softly radiant by night.

Alignment with the Pyramids: Built on a plateau approximately two kilometers from the Giza pyramids, the museum’s north and south walls align with breathtaking precision to the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure.

Spectacular Atrium: A soaring, 40-meter-high atrium houses the majestic Ramses II statue. It opens onto a grand staircase lined with nearly 90 statues and coffins—an unforgettable procession through power and eternity.

Grid of Twelve Halls: The exhibition spaces are arranged in a grid of twelve halls, presenting Egypt’s history chronologically from prehistory through the Greco-Roman era.

Thematic Storytelling: Galleries are also organized by themes such as society, beliefs, and kingship, blending chronological order with immersive narratives for a profoundly richer visitor experience.
